Plans for a “luxury dog hotel” have been granted approval. Sunderland City Council’s planning department sanctioned the application for the premises at 8-9 Murton Street, situated in the city’s Hendon ward. Concerns regarding drainage, noise, and odour had been raised by the environmental health team. However, the council’s decision report indicated that odour management would be achieved through the deployment of pet air purifiers and daily kennel cleaning, in addition to a monthly fumigation. The dog hotel is set to offer day and night care for a maximum of 16 dogs and will employ six full-time and two part-time staff members, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. As part of the proposals, external modifications are planned, including the reintroduction of a window to the rear of the building. Council planners observed that the building had previously operated as a nightclub and more recently as a gym, during which all windows had been blocked up. According to documents, measures are planned to reduce noise from dogs outside the facility during arrival and departure. The decision report stated that “any anxious dogs excessively barking will be taken to the owner’s home” as the operators also possess a home boarding licence. For exercise, up to six dogs will be walked simultaneously on a private field. Under the planning conditions, the development must commence within three years.
