An alert has been issued to rail commuters regarding anticipated disruptions to services heading into Crewe during the Christmas period. These disruptions are due to ongoing work aimed at enhancing freight services along the West Coast Main Line. According to Network Rail (NR), a curtailed service schedule will be implemented from Christmas Eve through Friday, January 3. Furthermore, an altered timetable is planned to be in effect from Saturday up to January 2. This includes a decreased frequency of services to Manchester and the absence of direct train connections to Liverpool on both January 1 and January 2. NR stated that the railway operator has committed nearly £200 million towards upgrading the independent lines that facilitate the movement of freight trains bypassing Crewe station. It was also noted that individuals utilizing replacement bus services on Friday, December 27, must possess a valid rail ticket for their travel. Solely on that specific day, buses are scheduled to arrive at and depart from Crewe Alexandra FC’s ground on Gresty Road, commencing at 07:00 GMT. NR further specified that appropriate signage would be erected, and personnel would be available to assist passengers in locating their respective buses. For all other dates, rail replacement services will operate to and from Crewe station, prompting passengers to verify their journey specifics. NR clarified that the project encompasses the Basford Hall lines, which enable freight trains to bypass the station and rejoin the West Coast Main Line, with the objective to “efficiently transport essential goods up and down the country, for years to come.” Significant drainage and track upgrades, alongside a complete re-signalling effort within the vicinity, have also been carried out, it was reported. Jamie Morris, the programme manager, commented: “We have worked hard to reduce the impact on passengers as much as possible, which means there is a different timetable on different days during this time.” He further expressed: “I am grateful to passengers and the community of Crewe for their patience during this important work.” For updates, follow BBC Stoke & Staffordshire across BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
