Christmas Donations Offer Support to Families Facing Hardship

A school has indicated that donations of coats, shoes, and Christmas gifts are offering crucial support to families facing hardship. Yorkshire Children’s Charity has been distributing winter necessities and presents to children requiring assistance at schools across the region, responding to a significant increase in requests. Vicky Hird, who serves as the deputy head teacher at Wansbeck Primary School in Hull, stated that for some children, these would be the sole gifts they obtain. Sarah Brignall, a volunteer associated with the charity, further commented that amidst the current cost-of-living crisis, “it’s an absolute godsend for a lot of parents”. According to Ms Brignall, educational institutions are able to submit applications to the charity for families identified as being in “desperate need” of warm attire and bedding for their offspring. “There is such a necessity for it. I think the applications this year have doubled.” Ms Hird further stated that the cost-of-living crisis has placed numerous families under significant pressure. “A lot of our families have gas and electricity meters that they top up, so they’re feeling that strain to warm the house,” she explained. “We do what we can to help by reaching out to charities.” Ms Brignall articulated that the initial crucial component of the initiative involved supplying essential items, with the subsequent part focusing on delivering presents. For each child, parents referred through a school receive £80 to choose gifts, which the charity then purchases and delivers, complete with wrapping paper and tags, prepared for wrapping. “To see those children and the joy on their faces, I get over-excited myself,” Ms Brignall commented, adding, “Seeing it being delivered is just fantastic.” She commended the dedication of volunteers, who were “all in their sheds now, putting the essentials into bags and delivering”. “The charity wants to make sure that the essentials get to as many places as they possibly can to make each child’s Christmas as special as possible,” she concluded.
