Over 650 gifts have been contributed to a dedicated Christmas initiative for children. The campaign was established by employees of the Butterfly Café, located in St Helier, with the aim of assisting young individuals who are currently in care, experiencing hardship, or are care leavers. These gifts are intended for recipients ranging from infants to individuals up to 25 years of age. The Butterfly Effect, a non-profit organization that operates the cafe, provides support, training, and employment opportunities to survivors of abuse in Jersey. Cheyenne O’Connor, a co-founder of The Butterfly Effect, managed an online wish list and also accepted in-person contributions for the appeal. She stated, “I absolutely love it” and added, “I think it’s about the community coming together at Christmas”. Ms O’Connor further commented, “we know what it’s like to wake up with nothing or not have the best Christmas and that’s why we think every child should have at least something to wake up to”. The gifts were wrapped and dispatched on Thursday, and personnel from the Children, Young People and Families department will distribute them. Constable Richard Vibert, the Children and Families Minister, described it as “an absolutely fantastic achievement” and noted that “these presents will make a big difference over Christmas”. He also stated, “We (the government) has supported the Butterfly Café throughout its life so far, but the workers here have done some fantastic work and I can’t say enough about that.”
