Little Village, a charity operating with hubs throughout London that supplies crucial items to families with young children, reports that it is “barely keeping up with demand.” This year, the organization has supported 9,201 children by furnishing them with necessities like clothing, nappies, bedding, and baby milk. Over the past 12 months, the charity distributed 5,820 coats and nearly 40,000 pairs of pyjamas to families requiring assistance. Angela Basso, Little Village’s head of fundraising, stated that demand has “noticeably increased over the last 18 months and we are now at a stage that we have more requests for help than we can respond to.” She also mentioned a consistent shortage of warm clothing for children aged three to five and encouraged individuals whose children have outgrown such items to consider donating them. Nataliia Kravchenko, who welcomed a boy earlier this year, has been a recipient of the charity’s aid. She described a delivered package, which included toys, books, a baby sling, a water bottle, and clothes, as “very helpful.” Ms. Kravchenko further explained, “I had nothing for the baby and was very worried because I didn’t have enough money.” Ms. Kravchenko, who arrived from Ukraine in 2022 with her 10-year-old son, noted that the charity also supplied essential items for him, such as a warm coat and shoes. Ms. Basso commented that the Christmas period can be especially challenging for parents concerned about affording gifts in addition to household expenses like rent and heating. To alleviate this pressure, the charity provides families with a “bundle of joy” during Christmas, comprising essential items along with a toy or gift for each child. “We match the family and the child’s interests with toys we give them,” she stated. “Toys are crucial for child development and they help reduce stress for the whole family. Playing and reading can also help connect families.”
