An individual who describes himself as a “non-swimmer” has been motivated by BBC Radio Oxford’s Children in Need swimming challenge to become part of the participating team. The Thousand Mile Challenge involves groups from various BBC radio stations throughout the UK, with each station aiming to complete a distance of 24 miles (38.6km). Dan, a resident of Wantage, has been taking swimming lessons for the last two weeks, having contacted the station prior to the commencement of the challenge. He now anticipates being able to swim one length alongside the team when they conclude their effort on Friday. Dan’s current teammates have completed 63 lengths each over the past four days at the Ferry Leisure Centre in Summertown. The team consists of Breakfast Show presenter Sophie Law, Breakfast newsreader Dan Freeman, journalists Sophie Rumsby and Jordan Brooks, and apprentice Jem Westgate. Dan stated: “I’ve been a non-swimmer for 54 years essentially – I don’t think I’ve ever taken my feet off the bottom of the pool.” He mentioned that one of his daughters recently began swimming, which also motivated him to learn. “She’s very excited when she goes to the pool and she’s splashing around and she wants me to be there with her, but I don’t want to be there with her because I just feel I’m going to be splashing more than her.” Dan has been receiving lessons with the assistance of BBC Radio Oxford. “I’m feeling good – the most amazing thing after two weeks of training is that my body has avoided serious injury.” Prior to joining the team for a length on Friday, Dan remarked: “The thing that gives me the biggest nightmare is that I’m going to get there tomorrow and you’re going to say ‘we’re all really sore – can you do the last 20 lengths?'” Concurrently, the team experienced a significant morale boost on their fourth day of swimming. When they were halfway through their 63 lengths, Mr Freeman disclosed that he had received an anonymous phone call earlier that morning from a woman who, inspired by the challenge, had consequently donated £500 to Children in Need. Ms Rumsby expressed that she was “speechless,” further stating: “It’s the best thing I’ve ever achieved!” “You never expect that someone would donate that much – it’s just incredible,” she commented. Ms Law indicated that the donation offered additional motivation for the swim, describing it as “like a little bag of gold dangling above the pool.” For further information, visit bbc.co.uk/swim.
