Child Fatality in Surrey Prompts Council Condolences

A local authority expressed profound sorrow and offered its “heartfelt condolences” following the death of a child in Surrey, who was struck by a falling tree branch. Emergency responders were dispatched to Grove Place in Banstead shortly after 16:00 GMT on Saturday, responding to notifications that a child was caught beneath a section of a fallen tree. The child’s age and gender have not been disclosed. Councillor Barry Lewis, who leads the London Borough of Sutton, described the occurrence as “tragic.” In a released statement, he conveyed: “On behalf of the council and community I’d like to extend my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the young person who lost their life.” He further stated: “We are working to support the police as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this.” The Met Police indicated that the event is not considered suspicious; however, investigations to ascertain the full circumstances and determine land responsibility are continuing. The police also mentioned that a report for the coroner would be compiled in due course. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was present at the location, accompanied by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and a fire crew dispatched by Surrey Fire and Rescue. Patrick Goulbourne, an LFB assistant commissioner, reported that despite the diligent efforts of emergency service personnel, the child’s death was confirmed at the site.
