Over £18,000 has been distributed to organizations in Cheshire to support impactful environmental initiatives, encompassing everything from establishing new wildlife areas to creating community gardens. Halton Council oversees this funding, which has been allocated to ten distinct groups throughout the borough with the aim of improving green areas, fostering sustainability, and encouraging community participation. Among the initiatives supported by these “Green Grants” is the establishment of an accessible pathway and raised garden beds at Clifton Road allotments, designed to form a central point for community gardening and social interaction. Wesley Rourke, Halton’s executive director for environment and regeneration, stated: “These projects exemplify the power of local action in creating a greener, more sustainable future.” He further informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service that these efforts “have strengthened community bonds, improved access to nature, and delivered real environmental benefits.” The funding additionally enabled a community garden to construct a greenhouse and a dedicated workshop area, ensuring that activities at the Wonky Garden can proceed throughout the entire year. Furthermore, vital tools were acquired for volunteers at Halton Village Millennium Green, facilitating the maintenance of the green space. Additional initiatives scheduled for 2024 and 2025 encompass an energy efficiency masterclass, intended to assist community organizations and businesses in making their premises warmer and more economical to operate.
