Cheshire East Council has announced that parking fees will be introduced at the majority of its car parks in certain areas of Cheshire, effective from 2 December. This change will affect locations where parking has historically been free. These plans, which received approval in January, have generated controversy and led to protests across several communities. According to Cheshire East Council, the implementation of these charges is “necessary” to guarantee equitable treatment for all towns and to alleviate a portion of the authority’s financial strain. Car parks in areas such as Alsager, Audlem, Bollington, Handforth, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich, Poynton, Prestbury, and Sandbach are among those affected by these modifications. Historically, certain parts of Cheshire East have offered free parking, a practice that originated from arrangements predating the formation of the current council in 2009. However, free parking will be maintained at a selection of smaller car parks in locations where the council determined that introducing pay and display systems would be “not value for money.” The authority additionally highlighted an existing initiative in specific areas that permits free parking after 15:00. It also stated that in some locations, charges would not commence until 09:00, accommodating school drop-offs. Mark Goldsmith, who chairs the council’s highways and transport committee, commented: “While we recognise these new parking arrangements have caused some concerns, they are necessary to ensure all our towns are treated in a fair and equal way, and to reduce some of the financial burden facing the council.” Post navigation Proposed Overhaul of English Local Government: Five Potential Impacts Farmers Stage Tractor Protest Against Inheritance Tax Proposals
