A medical day unit is scheduled to commence operations at its new location by Christmas, following a two-year period marked by delays. Specifically, Cheltenham General Hospital’s medical day unit will commence operations on Christmas Eve within the Oakley Ward, located in Centre Block. This move follows its relocation from its former premises, which were situated close to the Accident and Emergency department. This facility delivers essential intravenous (IV) therapies for patients suffering from conditions including multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. The new unit features two additional recliner chairs compared to its predecessor and was specifically designed to resolve patient concerns regarding privacy and dignity that arose at the former location. A significant number of patients visit the medical day unit (MDU) on a regular basis for IV infusions, while others utilize the unit to complete their treatment regimen subsequent to their discharge from the hospital. Vinod Mani, who leads the unit, supervised the relocation process. This transition occurred after more than two years of “meticulous planning and several setbacks.” Mani stated, “This unit is a lifeline for so many patients who rely on these treatments.” Mr. Mani further explained that the Nightingale-style configuration of the “bright, open space” incorporates 14 recliner chairs, facilitating easy observation of all patients by staff, in contrast to the “previous cramped unit.” He also added, “The greater capacity helps us treat more people and reduce costly hospital admissions, freeing up acute care beds.” Mani emphasized, “The light, space and comfort of our new MDU will make a huge difference to both patients and staff. The environment is now one we can be proud of and we look forward to welcoming our first patients on Christmas Eve.” Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust characterized the relocation as “another milestone” for the hospital, aligning with its ongoing efforts to enhance care quality and patient experience.
