Pop music artist Charli XCX disclosed that her parents transported her to raves for her performances when she was only 15 years old. She further stated that she convinced them by claiming she had “swim practice… At 2:00 A.M.” The album “Brat” by the singer sparked a cultural trend over the summer, leading numerous individuals to embrace the “brat” lifestyle. Since its June release this year, the album has gained traction through both its original songs and various remixes. The British vocalist, currently 32 years old, presented an introductory monologue during her hosting duties on Saturday Night Live (SNL) on NBC in the US. During this segment, Charli, whose birth name is Charlotte Aitchison, explained to the audience her journey to her current position. “I actually started performing when I was really young, and I played at my first rave when I was 15 years old,” she stated. “My parents actually drove me there. And, if you’re wondering how did I get my parents to drive me to a rave? Well, I just told them, ‘guys, I’ve got swim practice. At 2:00 A.M.'” She humorously added that she has progressed “a long way” and now perceives herself as “a triple threat, which in England means I sing, I drink, and I smoke”. Charli’s sixth studio album generated millions of social media posts, numerous dance routines, and even influenced American politics, as US presidential candidate Kamala Harris rebranded her social media presence with a “brat” theme to appeal to younger voters. While appearing on SNL, the British pop artist precisely articulated her personal definition of “brat.” “So many people have asked me, what is brat, and honestly, it’s just like an attitude, it’s a vibe,” she explained. “I have to say brat summer has been a crazy experience,” she further remarked. In her effort to define the term on SNL, she referenced an event where US businesswoman Martha Stewart erroneously asserted that a journalist who reported on her legal affairs had passed away. “Martha gets mad about an old magazine article and she says that she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead – that is brat,” she stated. “And then last Friday, when that exact journalist responded and said, ‘Hey, ‘I’m alive…’ – that is extremely brat.” Charli, who also performed as a musical guest on the program, continued by stating: “Honestly though, anyone can be brat.” “Keeping it real is very brat, it is all about being vulnerable, so truly, this is a dream come true,” she remarked. “I am so excited to be here, and I’m not used to being out this early on a Saturday night but for you guys, it’s worth it.” Charli has previously characterized “brat” as a girl who “has a breakdown, but kind of like parties through it,” someone honest, blunt, and “a little bit volatile.” She informed the BBC’s Sidetracked podcast that a “brat” individual might possess “a pack of cigs, a Bic lighter and a strappy white top with no bra.” The development of an aesthetic has gained popularity on TikTok, with Charli’s “brat girl summer” being interpreted as a counterpoint to other trends like the “clean girl” aesthetic, which emphasizes a feminine and well-groomed appearance. “Brat” was designated Collins Dictionary’s word of the year earlier this month, with lexicographers defining it as an individual exhibiting a “confident, independent and hedonistic attitude.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
