An organization dedicated to assisting disadvantaged young individuals in creating music has inaugurated a new recording facility. The Music Works provides mentorship to young people throughout Gloucestershire, a significant number of whom experience difficult situations. Mikel Medley, the youth support manager, stated, “I would almost say it’s been almost a life-changer for some of the young people.” Funding from a BBC Children in Need grant has enabled the charity to expand its operations, leading to the opening of a second music hub in Cinderford during September. Ultimately, the organization aims to extend its activities across the entire Forest of Dean, providing assistance to young individuals experiencing rural isolation or mental health difficulties. Mr. Medley reported that he has departed from work “crying with joy” due to the initiatives developed by the young participants and the conversations they have engaged in. He further commented, “They talk about things they never ever would have talked about if they weren’t in that setting.” Annually, the charity’s personnel engage with approximately 8,000 young individuals from its primary facility in Gloucester, which commenced operations in 2021. Additionally, they deliver programs to hospitals and schools throughout the county. Elissa, aged 14, has had the opportunity to participate in singing and podcasting. She remarked, “Everybody’s really unique and has their own style and nobody tries to be like other people, which probably makes it work.” “There’s so much going on all the time, music, dance, podcasting and writing,” she added. She concluded, “It’s all up to you, it’s your taste.” Javeisha Powell, 21, an alumna who now contributes to the charity, stated that the organization provided her with the chance to mentor other participants. She commented, “You feel very seen and heard, which has made me realise, actually, that I can do it.” Powell further elaborated, “I’m currently working with younger people which I feel is very beneficial for me because I’m learning from them, but also I feel I’m being the voice for them that I needed when I was younger.” Although the Forest hub began operations in September, its formal inauguration is scheduled for January. The charity is also organizing its fourth annual creative industries event on 14 November, aimed at connecting young individuals with professionals in the music industry.
