A charity dedicated to supporting individuals with learning disabilities has issued an appeal for assistance to raise over £200,000. The goal is to ensure the continued use of its primary operational site. Lowestoft and District Mencap, located in Suffolk, has initiated this fundraising campaign to purchase two buildings it currently utilizes for various activities and support services. Additionally, the organization intends to acquire a third building situated between these two existing properties, which recently operated as a barber shop. The managers of the properties have informed the charity that it has until October 2025 to accumulate the necessary funds, after which all the buildings will be placed on the open market. The charity presently manages two community facilities: the Unity Centre, which commenced operations in 2011 as a charity shop and café, offering advice, befriending, and hate crime support; and The Fort, a gaming hub, social, and creative space, established in 2019. Jacs Guyton, the chairwoman of Lowestoft and District Mencap, stated: “We have got so many plans for this site but the first hurdle is to be able to raise the money we need to buy the premises.” She further emphasized the urgency, adding: “If we don’t buy it or at least set the wheels in motion by next October, the entire site will be put on the market and then the chances are it will be knocked down and made into houses and then we’ll lose our home.” Ms. Guyton also acknowledged the support from their landlord: “We’ve been incredibly lucky to have had an amazing landlord, whose kindness and support has had a big impact on helping us survive the pandemic, the lockdowns and the cost-of-living crisis.” She concluded by explaining the current situation: “Unfortunately he now needs to look into selling the property, but he has generously given us a year to raise the money.” The charity requires £200,000 for the acquisition of the buildings and an additional £20,000 to cover the administrative and legal fees associated with the purchase. To date, pledges exceeding £200 have been received through a fundraising website. Ms. Guyton further remarked: “The Unity Centre hosts a variety of community and musical activities that have led to us taking part in performances at the London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall.” She highlighted the long-term benefits of the purchase, stating: “Not only would raising the money to buy the property help keep us safe for the long-term future, but it would also give us unlimited potential for things we can do to keep growing, to provide bigger and better things for the community.” Post navigation North Lincolnshire to Introduce Temporary Parking Badge for Individuals with Restricted Mobility NHS experiences record winter demand with 95% bed occupancy due to surging flu cases
