A new initiative aimed at promoting sports participation among young people with disabilities has been introduced by a football charity. This initiative, named the Sporting Chances scheme by The Wolves Foundation, will facilitate the provision of sports activities within schools, encompassing extracurricular clubs, evening sessions, and weekend programs. Individuals aged 11 to 25, specifically those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), will have access to diverse activities throughout Wolverhampton and the Black Country. According to a spokesperson for the charity, “This project is a great opportunity for us to remove barriers to attendance for SEND individuals.” A consultation conducted by the foundation revealed that children and young people with disabilities frequently encountered additional challenges in accessing sports and physical activities. The charity stated, “We all know the huge benefits that sport and physical activity can bring to people of all ages.” The foundation attributed its ability to “expand our offer to incorporate multi-sport delivery” to a grant received from the National Lottery Community Fund. It further commented, “It’s a really exciting project which we are thrilled to be delivering as we head into 2025.” The new initiative’s sessions are scheduled to commence on 6 January.
