An individual has contributed a “one-in-a-billion” spherical chicken’s egg to a charitable organization, an item he acquired on impulse following a few drinks. Ed Pownell, a resident of Lambourn, Berkshire, paid £150 for the egg earlier in the current year, characterizing the expenditure as “money well spent”. The egg was recently gifted by him to the Iuventas Foundation, an organization dedicated to offering mentoring, life coaching, and mental health assistance to young individuals throughout Oxfordshire. Initially, the charity stated it believed the donation “was a joke,” but it has subsequently devised a strategy to offer the egg for auction. This egg, notable for its round shape as opposed to the typical ovoid, was initially found by a woman in a box from her local supermarket situated in Ayr, Scotland. David Miller, an employee of Thomson Roddick Callan auction house, where the egg was previously sold, commented that spherical eggs are considered a “one in a billion” phenomenon. Following its acquisition in August, Mr Pownell arranged for the egg to be blown, a process that involves extracting its contents while preserving the integrity of the shell. Upon receiving the offer of the donation, Roz Rapp of the Iueventas Foundation stated: “I was slightly sceptical at first as I thought it was a joke.” Ms Rapp further explained that it was only “when a friend sent through the news article” that she understood the offer was genuine and “immediately accepted [it]”. The Iueventas Foundation’s auction, scheduled to conclude on 11 December, has already seen bids surpass £200, according to the charity. Mr Pownall discovered this rare item available for purchase during his visit to a pub. Asked at the time if he had any regrets regarding his acquisition, he responded: “It’s quite fun… I think for £150 it’s been money well spent.” For updates, BBC Oxfordshire can be followed on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram.
