A charitable bus has commenced a journey with the objective of providing festive hampers, containing food and gifts, to numerous families. Operation Community Hamper (OCH) is distributing 1,000 hampers from an open-top bus during an eight-day tour across West. During this journey, volunteers will also gather donations, with the initial stop scheduled for Weston-super-Mare at 18:00 GMT. Charlotte Churchill, a resident of Bristol, initiated this project in 2020, stating it serves as a “lifeline” for many and aims at “bringing some hope”. The families designated to receive these hampers have been referred by professional entities, including schools and general practitioners. According to the charity, a significant number of parents collecting the hampers are employed full-time yet continue to face difficulties covering fundamental living expenses, such as food and utility bills. Ms Churchill commented, “The support from local and national businesses has been amazing.” She added, “This project is about enriching their lives, adding to their emotional well-being and bringing some hope to them.” The charitable organization commenced its efforts by distributing 19 hampers in 2020. Last year, this number increased to 656, and for the current year, it has surpassed 1,000. The hampers contain items such as selection boxes, cereal, and hot chocolate, alongside essential goods like washing powder. Sarah Wallbridge, representing First Bus West of England, the company providing the bus for this tour, stated that the hamper initiative consistently impresses her with its “wow factor.” She further remarked, “The energy and passion the team has is amazing, and there’s a real sense of community with everyone super committed to make a real difference.” The Christmas bus is scheduled to visit various towns throughout Bath, Bristol, and North Somerset, operating between 18:00 and 20:00 GMT daily, until December 12.
