A tram extension, slated for construction following the Chancellor’s commitment to its funding in her Budget, will “change lives,” according to the West Midlands’ mayor. This specific link, connecting Wednesbury to Brierley Hill in the West Midlands, which is one of three planned network expansions, had previously encountered difficulties, including escalating costs. However, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced on Wednesday that the government would allocate £1.3bn to urban transport initiatives, encompassing the Brierley Hill expansion. Mayor Richard Parker stated that this decision demonstrates “great confidence” in the region. He added, “It’s a very important announcement. There’s been no money to complete that line in the past despite all the announcements.” Parker further remarked, “[Wednesday] was the first time the government, any government, has committed to completing this really important extension to that tramline through the heart of the Black Country.” He reiterated that the expansion is expected to “change lives and improve opportunities for everyone that lives in the Black Country.” Currently, the West Midlands Metro service operates between Edgbaston in Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Despite the £1.3bn pledge for transport projects in cities across the UK, the Chancellor did not specify the exact amount designated for the Metro expansion. The project had previously been considered likely to face delays or even cancellation due to rising expenses, before former mayor Andy Street announced in October 2023 that funding had been secured following the cancellation of HS2’s second phase. Nevertheless, a report in April detailed the “enormous cost” of expanding the Metro service, and no concrete plans for the project have been publicly released. On Tuesday, Anne Shaw, executive director of Transport for West Midlands, indicated that work on the next section of the Metro in Dudley could commence in January. This development, which constitutes phase two of the overall project, is intended to link Dudley to the Waterfront at the Merry Hill shopping centre. Phase one, connecting Dudley to Wednesbury, is anticipated to be completed by autumn 2025.
