Irene Lane’s birth coincided with the ongoing World War One and David Lloyd George’s premiership. After the terms of twenty-two additional prime ministers and another global conflict, Mrs. Lane marked her 107th birthday at Heathbrook House Care Home in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. However, her 77-year-old son, Bob Lane, indicates that she considers the occasion to be of little significance. Mr. Lane informed BBC Hereford and Worcester that her precise words were: “‘I can’t understand what all the fuss is about’.” Mrs. Lane, born in Birmingham, worked as a seamstress in the Moseley area before her marriage to Albert in 1940. She became a stay-at-home mother following the birth of her two children, and her son characterized her as “such a lovely mother” who enjoyed sewing. Mr. Lane further stated, “She’s always been prepared to do something for others, even if it’s meant she has lost out herself on things.” Beyond her two children, she also has six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. “It’s very special, she can’t believe she is a great-great grandmother, but she’s so proud,” Mr. Lane commented. Her husband passed away in 2012, and Mr. Lane mentioned that she “took it quite badly at first” due to their 72-year marriage. He added, “They had a very good marriage. They were together 72 years so it must have been good. There were tough times but they weathered them together.” Despite this, Mr. Lane noted that his mother consistently displayed strong resolve and always offered a “friendly smile.” When asked about the secret to her longevity, Mr. Lane explained that she had never smoked and did not consume much alcohol, though she would occasionally partake in some of her husband’s homemade wine. As part of her birthday celebrations, Mrs. Lane also received cards and visitors from North Bromsgrove High School and Catshill Middle School. Family members have been visiting her throughout the week, with the main celebration scheduled for Sunday at the care home. She was also expected to receive her fourth birthday message from the Royal Family, which Mr. Lane described as a “nice touch” for her. He conveyed her continued modesty, adding: “She doesn’t see herself as someone who’s up on a pedestal.”
