The war memorial located in Carlisle city centre has been successfully relocated in preparation for Remembrance Sunday events. This monument’s repositioning is part of Cumberland Council’s regeneration project for Market Square and Greenmarket. The authority stated that the memorial was moved to a “prominent location” within the square following consultations with the Royal British Legion. It also added that the ground surrounding the memorial was temporarily smoothed to “ensure easy walking access” for those attending the remembrance service. Before the service, barriers near the work area were adjusted, and the road was cleaned. As part of the commemorative activities taking place in the city, thousands of poppies, crocheted by various community groups, have been put on display. Additionally, the Civic Centre, Court Square, the Citadels in Carlisle, The Beacon in Whitehaven, and Allerdale House in Workington are being illuminated in red until 11 November. The council reported that the memorial’s relocation signifies the initial phase of a larger redevelopment project, which aims to transform the area into an “attractive, multifunctional space for both residents and visitors”. The redevelopment scheme has secured £34 million from the government’s Future High Street Fund. The authority had previously expressed its intention to make the area a “vibrant focal point that encourages community gatherings and increases footfall.”
