A sum exceeding £3 million is designated for the refurbishment of a municipal library, nearly four decades after its initial opening. Carlisle Library, situated within The Lanes shopping centre, requires “essential upgrades,” according to Cumberland Council. In addition to structural modifications like rewiring, the authority indicated the establishment would be converted into a “modern space,” featuring a dedicated children’s zone, study areas, and classrooms for adult education. The funding for this initiative is provided by the government as an element of the £19.7 million Carlisle Town Deal program. Cumberland Council announced that the designs are expected to be “finalised soon,” and the library is also planned to include a social area, charging points, and various computer hardware. The completion schedule for this project has not yet been disclosed. The library, located on the first floor of the shopping centre, commenced operations in April 1986.
