For 91-year-old Joy, the experience of becoming a recording artist has been unexpected. She is part of a group of care home residents who have launched a charity single to generate funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. The residents from Cottingham Manor Care Home, situated near Hull, recorded their rendition of “Que Sera, Sera,” the classic song by Doris Day, at a professional studio. Joy commented that older individuals should continue to seek new experiences, adding: “I think my grandchildren were really impressed with it.” The single is available for purchase in time for Christmas, but the memories formed during its creation will endure much longer, according to fellow singer Wendy. She stated: “I enjoy singing, always have done, but this is something out of this world.” Wendy’s daughter, Lynn Blofeld, expressed her delight that her mother was able to participate after enjoying rehearsals during a week-long respite stay at the care home. “Doing the singing has really helped her and given her confidence,” Lynn remarked. She concluded: “It’s just a win-win all round.” It took several hours to record all the vocal tracks in the studio before a producer finalized the single. Emmanuel, who performs the deeper vocals, mentioned that the recording process proceeded more smoothly than he had anticipated. He further explained: “I haven’t sung for 20 years, 30 years, so I didn’t know how my voice would come out.” Supporting the Alzheimer’s Society is a cause that resonates deeply with many of the singers. “It’s a very wonderful charity,” Wendy said. She added: “If we can do something to help, we will.”
