An 86-year-old resident of Redlands House Care Home in Norwich, Iris Moreton, originally from Blakeney, Norfolk, has realized her desire to swim once more, aided by BBC radio journalists. At the care home, residents are encouraged to express wishes, which have previously encompassed outings to the pub, bingo sessions, and visits from entertainers such as singers and dancers. Ms. Moreton, who previously swam in the sea at Blakeney during her school years, described her recent experience in the pool as “lovely.” “You don’t forget. I think now this will be the last time I will do this,” she stated. Mary Parkin, the individual responsible for overseeing activities at the facility, commented that her role was “one of the best” ever. She added, “I absolutely love it, seeing their faces light up.” Parkin continued, “It’s very emotional to see her have her dream all these years later. My residents mean the most to me and making them happy is my job.” Laura Ward, the care home manager, emphasized the significance of residents having dreams. She remarked, “I believe it doesn’t matter how old you are, people have goals and aspirations.” Ward further stated, “We just have so much fun. For me life is for living and we are the privileged ones looking after them.” Ms. Moreton was transported to David Lloyd’s swimming pool in Norwich. There, a team of five BBC Radio Norfolk journalists, including presenter Chris Goreham, were participating in the Big Swim event for Children in Need. The journalists were endeavoring to swim 24 miles (39km) individually, a distance equivalent to approximately 368 lengths of Norwich City’s Carrow Road football stadium. Throughout the week-long challenge, teams representing BBC radio stations nationwide have been working to complete a combined total of 64,000 lengths of a 25m (82ft) pool.
