The Cardiff Devils secured a 5-3 victory against the Sheffield Steelers in the Challenge Cup on Sunday, recovering from an Elite League defeat to the Nottingham Panthers the day before. During the match, the Devils, for whom Reid Duke contributed two goals, achieved their highest shot total of the season, outshooting the Steelers 55 to 19. This win against the reigning champions, Sheffield, sustains Cardiff’s prospects of advancing to the knockout rounds. The Steelers, having already secured their place in the semi-finals as the confirmed Group A winners, opened the scoring in the Welsh capital with Marc-Olivier Vallerand’s initial goal. Reid Duke then equalized for the home side, only for Vallerand to restore the visitors’ lead. Duke completed his second goal before the conclusion of the second period, and in the third period, Cole Sanford and Riley Brandt propelled the Devils into the lead. Mikko Juusola scored to narrow the Steelers’ deficit, but Joey Martin secured the win for the Devils in the closing moments. This outcome marked a positive shift for the Devils, who had previously suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Panthers in a match that was delayed by 90 minutes because the visiting team was held up in traffic for three hours en route to Nottingham. Brett Perlini, who scored for the Cardiff Devils on Saturday, previously played for the Nottingham Panthers, as did his father, Fred. In that game, Didrik Henbrant scored three goals for the Panthers. Cardiff began the match slowly, and their netminder, Ben Bowns, was instrumental in keeping the first period goalless, despite the Devils being outshot 11 to four. Henbrant put the home team in the lead during the second period, but Brett Perlini quickly equalized for the Devils, resulting in a tied score entering the third period. Henbrant, a key player for the home side, scored two more goals in the final seven minutes, securing only the Panthers’ third win of the season. Cardiff maintains its position at the top of the EIHL standings by a point, although they have competed in more games than all their competitors. Their next Elite League fixture is scheduled for Wednesday, 6 November, at 19:30 GMT against the Dundee Stars.
