Interim manager Omer Riza has expressed support for Cardiff City striker Yakou Meite, who recently responded to criticism during a match against Coventry. The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international netted his initial goal of the current season, and his first in nearly eight months, during the 2-2 draw with the Sky Blues. His celebration of an early stooping header involved placing his fingers to his lips, which was interpreted as a gesture to silence the criticism he had faced on social media throughout his period without scoring. Having scored only three goals since joining last summer, the former Reading forward subsequently made a post on X, external, addressing the criticism. He wrote: “Some of you can still try to make me responsible for everything when it’s not going well, but I will always give 100% till the end with the smile on my face. Thanks for the support always.” Furthermore, the Bluebirds’ acting manager Riza endorsed Meite, stating that the player capitalized on his opportunity with his display in the draw against Frank Lampard’s team. Riza commented, “I’m really happy for Yak. Sometimes things haven’t gone right for him, but he hasn’t once shirked responsibility or attitude or not shown character at any stage. Hopefully the fans can see what energies he’s put into the game because I thought he was one of our best players.” Addressing the social media matter, Riza further stated: “I’m sure he’ll have read it, but for me what’s important is that we know our players, we know how hard they work, how hard they try. I think it was important for him to get the opportunity and I think he took it.” Following a contentious late penalty that prevented Cardiff from securing a win at the CBS Arena, Meite is expected to seek an opportunity to capitalize on his recent goal and aim for his inaugural goal at Cardiff City Stadium when the Bluebirds play host to Watford this Saturday.
