Liam Belcher previously played for Porth Harlequins and Treorchy RFC before joining Cardiff’s academy. Liam Belcher, who serves as the club captain, has signed an extension to his contract with Cardiff. The hooker, developed within the club, had one year remaining on his current agreement but has now committed to a longer-term future at the Arms Park. The 28-year-old has accumulated 85 appearances for Cardiff, including a one-year period at Dragons, since making his first-team debut a decade ago. Belcher stated, “I’m really happy and grateful to extend my stay at Cardiff – the club I have come through since I was 15 years old.” He added, “I am enjoying my rugby and feel like we are building something here and heading in the right direction.” Belcher further expressed, “I want to remain a part of that process and believe we can put the club in a stronger position and begin competing for silverware.” Cardiff has not disclosed the specific length of his new extension. Matt Sherratt, Cardiff’s head coach, expressed his approval of the contract signing, describing Belcher as a “really important figure at the club.” Sherratt commented, “Over the past few years he has been a standout, consistent performer and he deservedly picked up the Peter Thomas Player of the Year award after his performances last season.” He continued, “He was an obvious choice as captain, following the retirement of Josh Turnbull, and continues to lead by example both on and off the pitch.” Sherratt concluded, “Technically, he is very good and this is combined with a detailed understanding of the game, his explosive athleticism and ability on both sides of the ball.”
