A woman, having made an unexpected recovery to walk again following a car accident, is now appealing to the public to fasten their seat belts. Ellen Hogan, a passenger in the back seat, unbuckled her seat belt to retrieve an item from the floor shortly before the vehicle collided with a tree near Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire in June 2022. At the age of 19, Ms Hogan sustained a punctured lung, a spinal fracture, and a brain hemorrhage, which rendered her unable to walk or speak. She now aims for others to draw lessons from her ordeal, stating that her recovery was something “no one expected, not even my family”. She recounted: “I couldn’t look after myself. I couldn’t go upstairs properly. It was really, really bad.” She added: “For the first year I was so down, so depressed and low. I just thought I’m not going to be able to do anything.” Her recovery involved diligent effort, including pleading with physiotherapists at Hull Royal Infirmary for twice-daily sessions. Upon discharge from the hospital, she relocated to her grandmother’s residence due to her inability to care for herself. Ms Hogan, a resident of Lincoln, further stated: “I’ve come a long, long way. They all thought I’d be in hospital for six months and would have to live in a care home.” She contacted the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) to share her story as an educational tool regarding seat belt importance. In conjunction with road safety charity Brake’s Road Safety Week, which commenced today, Ms Hogan has also produced a video detailing her experience for exhibition in schools across the county. Nick Matthews of LRSP commented: “We are very proud of what she has achieved with this video.” He continued: “It’s not easy to talk on camera, especially about such a traumatic thing, but Ellen speaks with such honesty and her story is compelling.” Matthews added: “It’s a potentially life-saving message and using Ellen’s voice to reach people, both online and in schools, will really help convey the difference a seat belt makes.” Annually, an average of 651 individuals nationwide suffer fatal or serious injuries as a result of not wearing a seat belt, as reported by Lincolnshire Police. Individuals found traveling in a vehicle without a fastened seat belt may incur an immediate fixed penalty notice of £100. Ms Hogan’s recommendation is: “If you are going to take your belt off, pull over.” She further stated: “If I was driving, I wouldn’t be here right now and I have been told that by the emergency services.” She concluded: “I was naive and silly. Big mistake. So please, wear your seat belt.” Post navigation A-Road Closure Expected Until Spring 2025 for Repairs A14 Eastbound Section Closed After Collision, Causing Significant Delays
