Burton Albion captain Elliot Watt stated that “hard truths” must be addressed within the club and accused several of his Brewers teammates of lacking “personal pride” following their FA Cup elimination by non-league rivals Tamworth, who secured victory via a penalty shootout. The League One team, currently positioned at the bottom of their division, was eliminated from the competition in the second round after suffering a penalty shootout defeat at their home venue, Pirelli Stadium, on Sunday. Burton’s exit, at the hands of a Staffordshire rival competing two divisions lower in the National League, marks the most recent setback for a club that has experienced considerable challenges since its acquisition and overhaul by the Nordic Football Group during the summer. “It meant the world to the fans today and it didn’t mean enough to a lot of the changing room,” Watt conveyed to BBC Radio Derby. He continued, stating: “The finer details in the game, we didn’t get right. They ran harder than us and ultimately it wasn’t good enough.” Watt further remarked: “We can tippy-toe around the situation we are in, but we need to get to the hard truths of the facts – there are a lot of people that need to step up to do more.” The Brewers experienced extensive changes over the summer, which included the arrival of new owners, a new manager, and a British record of 23 player acquisitions within a single transfer window. This period of significant transformation also involved the release of 24 players following the conclusion of the preceding campaign, during which the team narrowly escaped relegation. However, after 16 league matches this season, they occupy the bottom position in the table, having secured only one victory. Watt commenced his critical post-match interview with BBC Radio Derby by stating his efforts to “tried to stay upbeat and positive” and his attempts to say “the right things”. He then added: “It feels like a broken record going in there saying the same things after every match.” Watt voiced his concern, stating: “There aren’t enough people speaking up in the changing room and I get there are people learning on the job, maybe too many learning on the job, but ultimately we need to stand up, stick our shoulders out and be counted. At the minute it doesn’t feel like there are enough of us doing that.” He added: “There is a core group who are doing everything they possibly can and the rest need to step up now.” Watt indicated that it would be the responsibility of this core group to “drag people along” with them, and he openly acknowledged that “it’s not looking positive” for the Brewers. Burton’s poor beginning to the season resulted in the dismissal of Mark Robinson, the manager specifically chosen to lead their footballing transformation, approximately six weeks ago, with minimal indication of an impending permanent replacement. “It comes down to what is inside people and how much they want to improve, how much they want to do it for themselves and the fans,” Watt commented. He concluded: “And I don’t think there is enough personal pride in the changing room at the minute.” Burton’s upcoming fixtures include an away match against Peterborough on Wednesday, followed by a home game welcoming high-flying Wrexham to the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.
