On Thursday, a camper was rescued from Dartmoor after becoming disoriented amidst low cloud and blizzards. The North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team reported receiving a call at 11.04 GMT concerning a backpacker believed to be at Yes Tor. The team proceeded by vehicle to West Mill Tor; however, 5ft (1.5m) snow drifts rendered their Land Rover unable to advance. Consequently, rescuers continued on foot and located the stranded camper unharmed at the summit of Yes Tor. A spokesperson for NDSART stated: “The individual had become lost in the low cloud and ongoing blizzard which resulted in zero visibility at Yes Tor and extremely deep snow drifts.” They noted that the camper was “well prepared and had all the correct equipment with them.” They further explained: “However, the ongoing blizzard and ground conditions meant it was not safe for them to continue, and they did the correct thing by calling for help before they got themselves injured, cold and wet.” The search and rescue operation concluded, with the team stood down at 13:53 GMT.
