A woman has stated that the “heart-breaking” prospect of children not receiving presents during the Christmas period motivates her campaign to assist families facing difficulties throughout the festive season. Laura Evans, 32, a resident of North Petherton, Somerset, established the Help Thy Neighbour initiative eight years ago while serving as a volunteer at a local primary school. She recounted, “One of the children told me Father Christmas had never been to him because his family didn’t have money to send to him.” The campaign has since provided Christmas gifts to hundreds of families. Ms Evans recalled, “Eight years ago, when I asked the boy what he would like if I could arrange it, he said ‘maybe just a football or actually some pyjamas because I’m cold at night’.” She emphasized, “These are local children… [they] are the future of this town.” Ms Evans articulated her motivation: “The thought of children going into school and saying what they had for Christmas and someone just sitting there and not even having pyjamas because they’re cold at night is heart-breaking. That’s why I do it.” Ms Evans receives assistance from friends and her parents, Christine and Chris Hancock. She collaborates with seven local schools that identify children in need anonymously. Mr and Mrs Hancock expressed profound gratitude for donations from their friends and other community members they do not personally know. Mr Hancock added, “Presents are donated throughout the year.” The team is currently engaged in wrapping the gifts, with approximately 100 disadvantaged children anticipated to receive presents this year.
