British tennis player Cameron Norrie’s bid for his sixth ATP Tour title concluded with a loss to France’s Benjamin Bonzi in the Moselle Open final, marking an end to what he described as a challenging season without a trophy. The 29-year-old, seeking his first ATP title since February 2023, was defeated by the local player in Metz with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. This tournament marked only Norrie’s fourth appearance on the main tour following a nearly three-month absence due to a forearm injury. Norrie stated, “It would have been nice to win the tournament, but finding my level and competitive spirit on the court was the highlight of the week.” His enforced absence led to the former world number eight dropping out of the top 50 rankings. Furthermore, earlier in the year, he relinquished his position as the British men’s number one to the emerging talent Jack Draper. Despite characterizing the season as “challenging,” Norrie views his progression to the 15th ATP final of his career as a positive development he intends to leverage for the 2025 season. “I’m not so worried about the result [of the final],” Norrie commented, noting that he is projected to re-enter the top 50 of the rankings on Monday. He elaborated, “It was about playing matches in a row with consistency, feeling like myself and fighting for every point.” Norrie reflected, “It’s been a tough year. I wasn’t able to gain any momentum, but I’ve learned a lot.” Bonzi, despite his world ranking of 124th, has been experiencing a strong run of form, culminating in his first career title at the age of 28. Norrie’s inability to capitalize on opportunities proved costly, especially in a closely contested first set where he converted only one out of 13 break points. During a lengthy ninth game, the British number two generated 10 chances on Bonzi’s serve; however, his opponent displayed the consistent resilience observed throughout the week to maintain his serve. Bonzi subsequently secured the set via a tie-break and carried that momentum into the second set, achieving an early and decisive break. As Norrie attempted to recover, his aggressive returns grew less accurate, preventing him from exerting significant pressure on Bonzi’s serve. Serving for the championship at 5-4, the Frenchman exhibited no signs of nervousness, delivering an ace out wide to create championship point before ultimately securing the victory. Norrie concluded, “It was a really high-level match, there was nothing in it. He played better in the bigger moments.” In related news, at the Belgrade Open, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov also concluded a significant wait for an ATP title by defeating Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic in the final. The 25-year-old Shapovalov, who spent most of the season outside the top 100 due to a knee injury, claimed his first trophy since 2019 with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
