The operational zone for e-scooter and e-bike rentals in Cambridge is set to be expanded. This enlargement of the service area will enable users to travel along the Histon to Girton link and reach Cambridge University’s Laundry Farm on Barton Road. Additionally, a trial will introduce approximately 200 new e-bikes, characterized by their lighter weight, lower profile, easier accessibility, and enhanced manoeuvrability. Dr. Nik Johnson, who serves as the Mayor of the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA), expressed satisfaction with the extended deployment, stating it would allow “more people can benefit.” Additional phases of expansion are anticipated to be implemented progressively throughout 2025. Since 2020, the utilization of e-scooters and e-bikes in Cambridge has contributed to preventing 649 tonnes of carbon emissions, a quantity comparable to the weight of four blue whales. According to the scheme’s operators, the same journeys undertaken through their rental service would have generated an estimated 227 tonnes of CO2 if they had been completed using alternative motorised transport. Johnson commented: “We are committed to providing residents with reliable and affordable public transport options and e-scooters and e-bikes are proving a convenient and enjoyable way to travel around the city.” James Bolton, Voi UK’s general manager, stated that the initiative ranks among the most frequently utilized in the United Kingdom. He added: “Since we launched in Cambridge back in 2020, we have received regular requests from residents – including those from nearby towns and villages – about boosting our fleet size and operating area.” Bolton continued: “We are pleased this expansion can now happen and look forward to working with CPCA and other local stakeholders to deliver safe, sustainable and affordable micro-mobility to more of Cambridgeshire.”
