Balloting has commenced in the pivotal states anticipated to determine the successor to the US presidency: Vice-President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. Reports from our field correspondents indicate that voting locations are tranquil and, at times, celebratory. Numerous sites have also appeared largely vacant, attributed to the unprecedented volume of early and mail-in ballots cast in this election. Historically, voter lines have extended as closing times approached in previous elections. Among the seven crucial swing states, Georgia’s polls are scheduled to conclude first, at 19:00 EST (00:00 GST). All will conclude by 22:00 EST (02:00 GST), with polling places in western states ceasing operations at a later hour. By Bernd Debusmann, Philadelphia Voting commenced this morning in Philadelphia, the state’s largest city, marked by a celebratory mood. A “DJ at the polls” provided music for an extended line of predominantly smiling voters, who swayed their heads, sipped coffees, and consumed bagels outside a central church. However, some minor issues arose. At City Hall, election officials encountered difficulty with a jammed door, causing bewilderment for a small number of prospective voters. Voting stations at that location remained unoccupied an hour post-opening. In Delaware County, voter queues persisted throughout the afternoon. Individuals are experiencing approximately a thirty-minute wait to access the voting site in the state’s fifth most populated county.
