Residents of Jersey are being requested to pinpoint locations that distinguish the island, with the aim of nominating these sites for internationally acknowledged recognition. Jersey Heritage is currently preparing an application to achieve accreditation as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Geopark. Globally, there are presently 213 UNESCO Global Geoparks, with 109 situated in Europe. Furthermore, Jersey Heritage believes that specific individual locations could qualify for geopark status and is encouraging islanders to submit their recommendations. The organization indicated that sites could be evaluated under two distinct categories. It specified that locations like Anne Port or Portelet Bay might be suitable for the geological category, which emphasizes the natural history of a site. The non-geological category, focusing on historical elements such as structures, memorials, and culturally significant locations, also encompasses myths and legends. Jersey Heritage mentioned that potential illustrations for this category include Le Dolmen des Geonnais, Hamptonne, and St Clement’s Church. A spokesperson representing Jersey Heritage stated: “There is flexibility when selecting geosites and we are keen to ensure we capture as many ideas as possible…” Four informational sessions are scheduled for islanders to gain further understanding and contribute their ideas.
