An initiative has commenced to commission a significant artwork inspired by The Beatles, intended for placement outside a venue where the band performed 27 times. Artists from the Liverpool City Region are encouraged to submit proposals for a sculpture at Tower Ground in New Brighton, aiming to commemorate the Wirral town’s historical connection to the iconic Fab Four. The former Tower Ballroom served as the location for the band’s highest number of performances, with the sole exception of their renowned spiritual base, Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club. The organisers of the competition envision the sculpture, which must measure at least two metres (6.5ft) in height, to be visible from the River Mersey. On the opposite bank of the waterway, the Beatles statue situated on Liverpool’s Pier Head – a creation by Andrew Edwards, funded by the Cavern Club – has become a highly frequented spot for photographs since its installation in 2015. Financial grants will be extended to shortlisted applicants to facilitate the development of their concepts for Tower Ground. Local government bodies and private companies have supplied the necessary funding, following Wirral’s designation as the 2024 Borough of Culture.
