A bus operator has implemented a new program designed to enable passengers who feel unsafe to receive aid from the driver. Individuals experiencing threats or harassment can use the phrase “Ask For Angel Street” as a method to seek support. Stagecoach East Midlands confirmed that its bus drivers have undergone training in passenger safety and are prepared to contact the police. The company also stated that anyone in a precarious situation can board a bus and utter the designated phrase to escape danger. This initiative was initially launched at the firm’s Grimsby depot and was recognized with a shortlisting at the National Transport Awards earlier this year. The program draws its inspiration from the national Ask For Angela campaign, which allows people being harassed in pubs, clubs and bars to request help from staff by asking for the fictitious colleague. Matt Cranwell, the managing director at the bus company, characterized it as a “tool to empower members of the community” who feel unsafe.
