A nurse has been removed from the professional register after engaging in a relationship with a patient at a high-security psychiatric facility, a relationship that was later rekindled more than a decade after its initial occurrence. Trudy Megan Davies, employed at Broadmoor Hospital in Crowthorne, Berkshire, also exchanged presents with the patient. This relationship seemingly concluded following an inquiry and her subsequent resignation. In 2022, over ten years subsequent to these events, she informed a colleague at the Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Trust that her relationship with the former patient had recommenced, leading to her being reported to the nursing regulatory body. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stated that her professional misconduct “put patients, colleagues, the public and the security of the hospital at risk”. At the commencement of the relationship, she was assigned to a ward dedicated to patients diagnosed with serious personality disorders. The patient was subsequently moved to a different secure facility in a separate county for evaluation, where personnel observed him spending extended periods on the telephone. He declined to disclose the identity of the person he was communicating with, and “as [he] would not provide the information requested”, he was returned to Broadmoor. An internal inquiry determined that Miss Davies and the patient had been in communication and had initiated a relationship. Miss Davies acknowledged that her conduct constituted “a severe breach of trust and professionalism” and that it “distorted” the patient’s perception of her role as a nurse. She informed the NMC that the two individuals were “maintaining [their] relationship and looking to build a future together”. The NMC’s disciplinary panel concluded that she had given precedence to this relationship over her professional career, asserting that permitting her to continue practicing as a nurse “would undermine public confidence in the profession”.
