Reports indicate that a British man has been taken captive by Russian forces while engaged in combat for Ukraine. An online video shows an individual in military attire identifying himself as James Scott Rhys Anderson, 22, stating he previously served in the British Army. The Russian state news agency Tass cited a military source who stated that a “UK mercenary,” as they termed him, had been “taken prisoner in the Kursk area” of Russia. Ukraine has maintained control over a portion of this region since initiating a surprise offensive in August. The foreign secretary issued a statement saying: “We will do all we can to offer this UK national all the support we can.” When questioned regarding reports of Mr Anderson’s capture, David Lammy confirmed he had “been updated about that development in the last couple of days.” Scott Anderson, the father of Mr Anderson, revealed he had pleaded with his son not to travel to Ukraine. “He wanted to go out there because he thought he was doing what was right,” Mr Anderson informed the Daily Mail. “I’m hoping he’ll be used as a bargaining chip, but my son told me they torture their prisoners and I’m so frightened he’ll be tortured.” Mr Anderson recounted receiving the video from his son’s commander, which left him “in complete shock and tears.” He further stated, “I could see straight away it was him. He looks frightened, scared and worried.” The video, initially shared on the Telegram messaging platform, shows Mr Anderson informing an interrogator off-camera that he served as a private in the British Army between 2019 and 2023. He explained that he enlisted in Ukraine’s International Legion—a military formation composed of foreign volunteers—after becoming unemployed and observing television reports concerning the conflict. He detailed his journey, flying from Luton to Krakow in Poland, then proceeding by bus to the Ukrainian border. On 6 August, Ukraine initiated a surprise assault into Kursk, penetrating up to 18 miles (29km) and securing approximately 1,000 square kilometres of Russian land. Russia has since deployed around 50,000 troops to the area and has commenced regaining territory amidst intense combat. The Foreign Office confirmed it was “supporting the family of a British man following reports of his detention.” Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
