British military expertise has been enlisted to aid in identifying those responsible for operating drones in the vicinity of U.S. military installations. Approximately 60 Royal Air Force (RAF) personnel have been dispatched to support the U.S. Air Force in its ongoing investigation, as understood by the BBC. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) indicated that the drones were not deemed hostile, adding that the sightings had “fluctuated and varied between the bases” and had “ranged in sizes and configurations.” The Ministry of Defence stated: “We are supporting the US Air Force response.” This news follows numerous recent reports of unmanned aerial vehicles observed near RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, both situated in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell in neighboring Norfolk. Further drone activity was reported overnight. The USAF specified that the vehicles were limited in number and size. A spokesperson for US Air Forces in Europe confirmed: “We can confirm there were sightings yesterday during night-time hours and can only confirm that the number fluctuated and varied between the bases over the night.” The spokesman further noted that since the initial sightings on 20 November, there had been “no impact to residents or infrastructure and they have not been identified as hostile.” Nevertheless, the drones continue to be monitored “to ensure the safety and security of the installations.” They added: “We request individuals in the area to contact either local police or security forces if they see anything suspicious.” Neither U.S. nor U.K. officials have disclosed the potential individuals or groups behind the recent drone activity. However, the BBC understands there are concerns that a state actor might be involved. In recent months, intelligence officials have issued warnings about an increase in Russian sabotage operations targeting Western nations that are providing support to Ukraine. RAF Mildenhall primarily hosts the USAF’s 100th Air Refuelling Wing; RAF Lakenheath is home to USAF F-35A and F-15E fighter jets; and RAF Feltwell is predominantly involved with logistics and provides housing for military personnel. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, which owns these bases, affirmed: “We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites.” Support is being provided for the US Air Force’s response.
