Commercial establishments located within a Brighton tower block have been compelled to cease operations due to identified fire safety hazards within the structure. Brighton and Hove City Council announced the immediate and temporary closure of New England House over the weekend, citing “intolerable specific fire safety risks at New England House that we cannot ignore.” The council indicated that the premises would not reopen until fire wardens were secured, a measure it aims to have in place by Tuesday. Tenants were also informed that future business hours would be restricted. Donna Chisholm, corporate director of the council’s city services, stated: “We are truly sorry for the inconvenience and potential loss of income this temporary closure causes. The council is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone and are working diligently to reopen the building on Tuesday. We recognise the financial impact this may have and will of course offer compensation for specific losses if tenants can provide evidence.” She further noted that the short-notice closure had “a disruptive impact.” The electrical supply to the building remains active, and occupants have been advised that they can access their units to retrieve items, subject to arrangement with site security personnel. A meeting with the building’s tenants is scheduled for the upcoming week.
