A Brighton-based actress is making her West End debut in the production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Miranda Mufema, aged 21, portrays Patty Newby, a role specifically developed for this theatrical adaptation. This stage show emerged from the popularity of the Netflix series and serves as a prequel, taking place in the fictional setting of Hawkins. Speaking to the BBC, Ms Mufema stated that “the spirit of Stranger Things is to embrace your weirdness, and to find connections with others through that.” The prequel’s narrative unfolds in 1959, approximately two and a half decades prior to the events of the series. Viewers anticipate the release of the fifth series on Netflix in 2025. The production has received two Olivier awards, is under the direction of Stephen Daldry, and is being staged at London’s Phoenix Theatre. The storyline centers on the arrival of new student Henry Creel and his family’s efforts to establish themselves in the town. Ms Mufema commented that her character strongly resembles her younger self, describing her as “really imaginative” and a “strong individual”. Her portrayal of Patty Newby is scheduled to continue until late 2025. Ms Mufema received her training at ThirdSpace Theatre in Brighton, characterizing the company as a “beautiful organisation” that “supported young people who perhaps didn’t have access to theatre”.
