Organisers have confirmed that a charity Boxing Day swim scheduled for the Yorkshire coast will proceed, notwithstanding concerns regarding substandard water quality. This marks the third consecutive year that Bridlington’s South Beach has received a poor water quality rating. The Environment Agency conducted its annual assessment based on tests performed between May and September. Martin Jolly, the swim organiser, expressed his hope that participants would still join him for a brief festive immersion. He stated, “We had the same problem last year with the water quality, but we do have a safety brief before we go in the water.” Mr. Jolly further explained, “We don’t swim miles – we just go up to our knees until we go numb and then come out.” He concluded by adding, “But, it’s everybody’s personal choice whether they go in.” According to Mr. Jolly, the event has previously drawn approximately 60 swimmers, in addition to numerous supporters. He commented, “Hopefully, we will get a many as in previous years – the more the merrier.” Mr. Jolly also mentioned that beyond being an enjoyable activity, the event serves as a fundraiser for local Alzheimer’s groups. Registration is scheduled for Richie’s Cafe Bar at approximately 10:30 GMT, with the swim commencing around 11:00. South Beach is often referred to as the primary attraction within Bridlington’s tourism portfolio. A recent inquiry conducted by the Environment Agency determined that faecal matter originating from local seabird populations substantially contributes to the beach’s poor water quality. Yorkshire Water, which operates sewage overflow pipes in the vicinity, has acknowledged the necessity to “work harder” to decrease discharges into the sea.
