A woman who overcame breast cancer and subsequently established a charitable organization to assist patients has articulated the profound satisfaction she derives from helping others. Jo Knight, a resident of Dover, Kent, received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2017. Four years later, she launched Preloved Reloved Cancer and Beyond. This volunteer-run initiative supplies cancer patients with essential and practical items, such as wigs, specialized bras, and mastectomy pillows, at no cost. Speaking to the BBC, Ms. Knight stated: “When I finished my treatment, I wanted to do something to make a difference. It just fills my heart with joy to help others.” Following her diagnosis, Ms. Knight underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, which resulted in persistent chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Her personal experience led her to use a headscarf, prompting her to assist others in accessing similar items, particularly those facing financial hardship. She remarked: “Cancer is bad enough, but when you may not have the funds to provide these sorts of items it is even worse.” Ms. Knight’s care packages, promoted in local hospitals, community groups, and on Instagram, also aim to provide recipients with an “emotional boost.” The single mother shared her personal experience, saying: “I know exactly what it feels like to be diagnosed and to go through treatment. “Your world comes crashing down,” she added. “I could not have done it without the support from others.” Looking ahead, Ms. Knight expressed her aspiration to create a secure environment where cancer survivors can connect for guidance and mutual support. She commented: “Unfortunately, cancer isn’t going away.” For individuals impacted by the subjects addressed in this article, resources and assistance can be found on the BBC Action Line pages.
