The 185-year-old Branston Bridge, situated in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, has been closed for a five-day period to allow engineers to carry out inspection works. The closure is scheduled to last from Monday until Friday. Traffic utilizing the railway bridge on the B5018 Main Street has been subject to weight and width restrictions since August, a measure implemented due to structural concerns, as stated by the council. Engineers are slated to excavate investigatory holes to identify utilities and assess ground conditions. This preparatory work will inform the planning for how the bridge can be reinforced, with the expectation that such strengthening could eventually enable heavier vehicles to use the bridge once more. Mark Deaville, cabinet member for strategic highways, commented: “We understand the inconvenience the closure will cause, but our priority is to ensure there is a safe structure in place so larger vehicles can eventually cross the bridge again.” He further indicated that the council plans to discuss with the Department for Transport the government funding required for any proposed future works. The council reported that options currently under consideration include the installation of a temporary metal structure or a concrete strengthening slab. Signed diversion routes will be in effect for the duration of the bridge’s closure.
