Young individuals have been encouraged to explore Bradford’s museums and galleries through a series of workshops led by their peers. This initiative forms part of the city’s Young Ambassador programme, which aims to assist people aged 16 to 25 in acquiring new skills and experiences beneficial for future job applications. Participants in this year’s program organized five events at council-operated venues, featuring activities such as crafting bookmarks and creating a traditional dastarkhan tablecloth. Councillor Sarah Ferriby, the executive member for healthy people and places, characterized the scheme as “a great success.” She further stated: “It is so important to engage young people in the art, history, heritage and culture contained within our museum venues.” The concluding workshops were conducted at the Bradford Industrial Museum on 8 December. Young ambassador Imamah remarked that participating in the scheme had been “such an enjoyable experience.” “My favourite thing has been the amazing people I’ve got to know,” she said. She also noted: “Everyone is so friendly and there is so much opportunity to creatively work as a group and take charge of what we do with our time.” Sofia, another ambassador, commented: “I’ve loved volunteering because I feel like I’m not only engaging with the Bradford community, but my team and I are also helping to give our perspective as young adults on how to get more people engaged with history and museums.” Applications are now being accepted for the next group of Young Ambassadors.
