A prominent art gallery located in Bradford will temporarily cease public operations to facilitate “significant” enhancements in preparation for the city’s UK City of Culture 2025 festivities. Bradford Council, the entity responsible for managing Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, stated that the venue would be inaccessible from Tuesday, November 19, through Friday, December 13. A spokesperson for the authority indicated that the government-financed project involves “essential refurbishment” intended to “ensure the venue meets the highest standards for the upcoming cultural programme.” These planned enhancements, they further noted, encompass upgrades to lighting and gallery areas, improvements to accessibility features, and the modernization of the gallery’s infrastructure. The UK City of Culture year in Bradford is slated to feature over 1,000 new performances and events, comprising 365 artist commissions, several significant arts festivals, and both national and international collaborative projects. The council spokesperson also mentioned that certain exhibits from the gallery were already being placed into storage ahead of the temporary closure, resulting in the ground floor galleries being currently inaccessible. Councillor Sarah Ferriby, who serves as the executive member for healthy people and places, stated: “We are excited to embark on this transformative project. These improvements will not only preserve the historical essence of the gallery, but also elevate it to a new level of excellence, ready to welcome many more visitors during the district’s year as UK City of Culture in 2025.” The council announced that Cartwright Hall Art Gallery is anticipated to resume public operations on Saturday, December 14.
