Bomb Disposal Experts Respond to Two Car Fires Under Investigation in East Devon

Authorities are conducting an investigation following an incident in east Devon where two vehicles were deliberately set on fire, prompting the deployment of bomb disposal specialists. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service dispatched a crew from Middlemoor to a residence on Great Meadow in Cranbrook at 04:40 GMT. According to Devon and Cornwall Police, two cars were discovered ablaze, with the homeowner having attempted to extinguish the flames using a garden hose. Royal Navy EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) personnel were also summoned to the location and successfully rendered a device “safe” in proximity to one of the vehicles. Police stated: “Emergency services attended the scene where it was reported that a suspected ordnance was located.” They added that “Royal Navy EOD teams attended to assist with enquiries at the scene and made the item safe.” The EOD confirmed that one device was “rendered safe” near one of the burning vehicles. The Ministry of Defence reported that the matter was subsequently transferred to police jurisdiction. Police confirmed that a cordon was established and several adjacent properties were evacuated, with residents permitted to return to their homes around 11:00. Officers further stated: “The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate and will be investigated.” The police have appealed to anyone possessing information regarding the incident to come forward. A force incident manager confirmed that an individual has since been apprehended on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
