Train passengers have been informed that they must be on board their service 40 seconds prior to its scheduled departure time. This is the moment when carriage doors will soon commence closing at Birmingham New Street, an initiative designed to assist services in leaving punctually. This adjustment represents a 10-second increase for some services and is scheduled to begin on Sunday across all platforms. The measure was agreed upon by Network Rail and train operators with the aim to help “keep passengers on the move.” Steven Ireland, from National Rail, commented that this change is intended to ensure greater reliability for rail journeys. He stated, “At this time of year, when we see an increase in visitors for the Christmas markets and events across the city, the station and platform can get really busy. While only a 10 second increase for some services, that extra time allows for everything to be in place to allow the train to leave on time and help to reduce any delays to passengers.” Services operating into and out of the station are provided by West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, and Transport for Wales.
