Hundreds of additional children in Birmingham could receive free school meals following a proposed change currently under development by the city council. Child poverty stands as one of the city’s most urgent issues, affecting tens of thousands of children across the area. Council leader John Cotton confirmed that plans are in progress to automatically enroll children in Birmingham who meet the eligibility criteria for free school meals but are not presently utilizing them. The authority stated that an analysis indicates this modification would immediately benefit over 2,300 children from the city’s most economically disadvantaged households. According to the Labour-run council, families who qualify for free school meals typically need to register their children to obtain a meal, even if they fulfill the necessary criteria. The authority noted that some eligible families did not sign up due to various factors, including language barriers, a lack of understanding of the criteria, or a stigma associated with sharing financial information. At Tuesday’s full council meeting, Councillor Cotton stated: “This is a really important move that will tackle term-time hunger for many children.“It will make a huge difference to struggling families across Birmingham if we cut the red tape, reduce stigma and make it easier for children in this city to access the healthy, nutritious food that they need…auto-enrolment also provides one less thing for families to worry about who are already under a lot of stress.” Cotton also mentioned the government’s determination to address child poverty and praised the chancellor’s decision to extend the Household Support Fund until March 2026 in the recent Budget.
