A prominent Christmas market in the United Kingdom announced a re-evaluation of its security protocols following an incident in Germany. Authorities reported that five individuals died and over 200 sustained injuries when a vehicle was driven into a gathering at a Christmas market in Magdeburg last Friday. Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market, an annual event drawing millions, described its security measures as “robust”. The market further stated that after consultations with a police security advisor, “no changes are required and all staff remain vigilant”. PA Media indicated its understanding that no specific intelligence pointed to a threat against any Christmas market within the UK. The national threat level for the entire United Kingdom continues to be substantial, signifying that “an attack is likely”. A joint statement issued by Frankfurt Christmas Market Ltd and Kurt Stroscher of Frankfurt City Council affirmed: “Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market has a robust security concept that is the result of multi-agency planning that includes police security and counter-terrorism specialists.” The statement also mentioned that “in light of last night’s tragic events in Germany”, the existing procedures underwent review and discussion with the police security advisor. Furthermore, the statement conveyed that such occurrences reinforce the commitment of those managing the Birmingham market to “constantly rethink and optimise the security concept” in order to ensure the highest level of safety for attendees.
