Multiple prospective buyers are currently engaged in discussions concerning the future of a property that served as an inspiration for the Peter Pan narrative. The deadline for submitting offers for the Moat Brae location in Dumfries concluded over a month prior. Liquidators have verified the receipt of several proposals for the erstwhile children’s literature center, which ceased operations in August. Nevertheless, they indicated that the timeframe for any potential sale is still undetermined. The mansion, where author J.M. Barrie spent time playing during his childhood, closed its doors this summer, approximately five years after its inauguration following an extensive multi-million pound renovation. Liquidators were appointed to the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust (PPMBT), the organization responsible for operating the facility, and the property was subsequently listed for sale. Several creditors have already presented offers with the aim of “claw back” the financial assistance they provided to the development. The deadline for submissions of offers for Moat Brae was 3 October, and it has since been confirmed that there is interest in acquiring the property. A statement from the liquidators confirmed: “Offers were received for the property at the closing date.” They further stated: “Discussions are ongoing with the parties who submitted offers.” The statement concluded: “Timescales for a sale remain uncertain and we will confirm once a preferred bidder has been formally selected.” Several organizations had previously declared they would not be submitting a bid for the property. These include the Crichton Trust, the community organization The People’s Project, and Professor David Thomson and Teresa Church, who are proprietors and operators of various other historical properties within the region. South of Scotland Enterprise has stated its ongoing collaboration with “key partners” to explore potential avenues for the building’s continued utilization by the community.
